Itinerary
Upon your arrival this morning, you will transfer to our accommodations and drop off your bags. We’ll meet up for a welcome breakfast to meet our guide and discuss our short, but awesome adventure to come.
After breakfast, we’ll begin our adventure by heading to Sky Lagoon for our first introduction to Iceland. Here, we will indulge in the 2 hour Skjol Ritual. The ritual begins with a dip in the geothermal waters of the lagoon where we will settle into the natural warmth while admiring the stunning views. Next, we will experience the cold plunge inspired by Iceland’s ancient Snorralaug pool. After this, we’ll warm up again in the sauna complete with ocean views.
Next, we’ll be refreshed with an energizing cold mist and then gently exfoliate our skin with the spa’s signature sky body scrub. We’ll keep the scrub on while we enter the next to last stage of the ritual: a steam. And finally, we’ll end the experience with an elixir with the taste of the essence of krækiber — the crowberries that dot the lava fields. This wholesome shot stimulates the palate with a profile that embodies the spirit of this mysterious land. After the spa ritual, we’ll head to our hotel where we will check in and relax and/or explore on your own for the rest of the day.
This morning we will start our day with an invigorating whale watching tour. We’ll join a highly enthusiastic and experienced team in search of a variety of wildlife– whales, dolphins, and birds. The tour will between 2 and 3.5 hours and includes essentials like warm overalls and blankets, a heated indoor saloon with large viewing windows, and a wildlife guarantee. If we don’t spot any whales on our outing, we’ll get vouchers to use another day.
After our morning excursion, we’ll head to The Pearl for lunch. At the restaurant here, we sit right under a glass dome with a 360 degree view over the capital area and mountains around.
After lunch, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of Reykjavik. We will explore this northernmost capitol city and the largest town in Iceland. The city area coastline is characterized by peninsulas, coves, straits, and many small islands. Across the bay rises Mount Esja the highest mountain in the vicinity of Reykjavik. We will visit the Harpa concert hall, the Hallgrímskirkja church, the downtown parliament area, and other interesting sights. After the tour, we’ll have time to relax and/or explore on your own.
This morning after breakfast, we will head eastward on the main road. As we travel, we will pass the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier and volcano that erupted so dramatically in 2010.
Along the way, we will visit the Lava Center, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years.
In addition, we will also see Seljalandsfoss waterfall and the vast expanse of the Eldhraun lava field with views of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe.
We will spend the next two nights inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vatnajökull National Park, where we will experience Iceland’s splendor: its largest glaciers, highest mountains, and the mesmerizing Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
Today we will spend the day in one of the most iconic loactions in Iceland: the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. We will take some time to explore this enormous glacier lagoon and the icebergs which float by, glistening in the winter sun. Seals can often be spotted swimming among the icebergs. We will make our way over to Diamond Beach, where the icebergs from the lagoon wash up on the shores of this black sand beach.
Tonight, we will hopefully experience the wonders of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in this unique setting.
OPTIONAL:
If you are looking for a little bit more excitement, today you will have the option to visit one of the blue ice caves in the region. We’ll take modified 4x4 vehicles and be transported across the rugged terrain through the remote glacial landscapes. This will be an adventure in and of itself. We’ll be dropped off as cloas as possible to the edge of Europe’s biggest glacier and then walk up to 20 minutes on uneven terrain to the best (and safest) ice cave. Once we reach it, we will walk through the frozen corridor observing the blue hues and textures of this ancient ice. You’ll have enough time inside this unique feature to take pictures and explore with your local guide. After this, we will return to our 4x4’s and head back to the starting point.
Since this activity isn’t for everyone, we are making it optional. Should you choose to include it, pick this optional activity ($195 USD extra) when you book!
This morning, after breakfast, we will begin our return to Reykjavik via the Ring road to south Iceland. We will make stops along the way to the famous sights of Reynis Dara black sand beach and Skógarfloss waterfall.
We will pass through Skogar where we will visit the unique Skogar Museum which houses an eclectic collection of artefacts and includes an “open air” museum where we will experience the architectural heritage of Iceland.
After our visit here, we will head to our nearby accommodations.
After breakfast today, we will follow the Golden Circle route which will take us to the majestic Gullfoss waterwall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in the country. Additionally, we will witness the eruption of Stokker geyser.
We will stop for lunch at the unique Friðheimar tomato farm. In addition to eating, we will see how Iceland sustains its local food production year-round, using the area’s geothermal heat. Doubling as a horse breeding farm, you will also be presented the opportunity to meet the friendly Icelandic horse.
After lunch, we will make our way back to Reykjavik passing through Thingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most important places in Icelandic history. It is also famous for its unique geological features due to its special tectonic and volcanic environment. Here the effect of the phenomenon of continental drift can be clearly seen in the crack and faults traversing the region, including the most famous one, Almannagjá which is a veritable canyon.
From here, we will return to our accommodations in Reykjavik for our last night in this magical land.
This morning, after a leisurely breakfast and morning, we will each make our own way to the Keflavík (KEF) Airport in plenty of time for our departing flights.
